The smart city certification program was implemented in 2017 when Article 32 of Act on the promotion of smart city development and industry was newly established to improve the level of smart cities and promote related industry. Since then, various discussions have been held to operate the smart city certification program, and Article 31 of enforcement decree of the act on the promotion of smart city development and industry was revised in July 2020 to lay the basis for smart city certification standards and evaluation agencies. In order to stably operate the smart city certification program, the ministry of Land, Infrastructure and Transport implemented a pilot certification program, in 2019, and will implement the program, in earnest from 2021.

Smart city certification program institutions prepare certification standards, evaluate certification, promote certification systems, consult local governments, research activities to continuously improve the certification program, support domestic and international public relations, and analyze and utilize certification-related statistics.

We will lay the foundation for the achievements of smart cities being promoted in various ways in Korea to be properly evaluated, contributing to the development of smart cities in Korea, and laying the foundation for future national policy establishment.

We ask for a lot of interest from local governments and citizens, and will try to properly evaluate and spread successful smart city cases in Korea through the smart city certification program.
