Smart City Certification

As the urban area is rapidly changed and developed in the era of the 4th industrial revolution, cities are adopting smart city certification programs which verify cities’ services and their technologies based on demonstration projects.

A smart city indicator system that enables identification of the smart city level and comparison within the cities is an essential policy tool for determining whether to support the cities and adjust their support programs.

Korea’s Ministry of Land, Infrastructure and Transport recognized the importance of the indicator system and introduced an indicator-based certification program when “Act on the Promotion of Smart City Development and Industry" was revised in 2017 and 10 cities were firstly granted pilot certifications in 2019.

Nowadays, many local governments in Korea use the certifications as global publicity similar to other international indicators and certifications.
